# My JARVIS Moment: AI That Works With You, Not Instead of You.

The best personal AI assistant works like JARVIS: it learns how you work, handles the admin, and leaves the judgment to you. What I learned testing one.

![](https://blog.livinghr.com/hubfs/AI%20That%20Works%20With%20You%2c%20Not%20Instead%20of%20You.png)

What should a personal AI assistant actually do? Work the way JARVIS worked for Tony Stark: learn how you operate, take the admin off your plate, and leave the judgment to you. I've been testing one that comes surprisingly close.

My favorite character in the Marvel universe is Iron Man, aka Tony Stark. Tony built the Iron Man suit to escape capture. He turned his engineering, technology, and weapons brain into a suit of armor. While most of the story requires a stretch of imagination, he was a normal but wealthy man who did extraordinary things.

In addition to the suit, he built a technological assistant he called JARVIS. JARVIS was Tony's AI: full of knowledge, able to visualize situations, always guiding him inside the suit. JARVIS was eventually succeeded by FRIDAY, and Stark kept building. EDITH showed up later in the Spider-Man films.

The relationship between Tony and JARVIS has always been my gold standard for human-AI collaboration. The AI is there to support the human, not replace them. Tony was impressive solo, but with the suit and JARVIS, he was basically unbeatable. That's the model we should all be striving for (minus the risk of midair collisions, unless your insurance agent is braver than mine).

## Can a personal AI assistant actually be your JARVIS?

While my Iron Man suit dreams remain firmly in the realm of science fiction, having my own JARVIS suddenly feels a lot more realistic. Enter Instinct. I stumbled across this tool and have been putting it through its paces ever since. At first, I figured it would be another ChatGPT or Claude: useful, but not exactly Tony Stark material.

But there have been moments when Instinct genuinely felt like it was channeling its inner JARVIS.

### Test one: the email I forgot to answer

Take this for example: I completely missed an email (it happens to the best of us). Instinct flagged it, let me know I hadn't responded, and even offered to handle the reply. Naturally, I was skeptical. Could it really match my tone and context? Spoiler: it nailed it.

The response sounded like I wrote it myself, quirks and all. I reviewed the draft, changed nothing, and gave it the go, then Instinct sent the reply. After a quick sign-in (no password sharing required), the job was done. As a bonus, it created a summary of the whole exchange in a new Google Doc, just because I asked. If that's not a JARVIS moment, I don't know what is.

### Test two: my wife vs. the AI on frequent flyer points

Let's talk about frequent flyer points, the ones that always seem to expire the moment you need them. My wife is a wizard at this stuff; she actually enjoys hunting for deals, while I'd rather get a root canal than spend an hour on airline websites or listening to hold music. So I let her work her magic, but I also gave Instinct the same challenge. After securely logging into my airline accounts (no personal info changing hands), Instinct started asking the right questions, just like my wife, and got to work finding the best flight.

An hour later, Instinct landed on the exact same flight, using the same points, and matching all my preferences. In the end, my wife booked it (happy wife, happy life), but Instinct had everything ready to go, Known Traveler Number included. The kicker? Instinct went the extra mile and asked if I needed a hotel at my destination, serving up a list of options with prices and availability. My wife skipped that step because she already knew I had the hotel covered. Advantage: AI, at least on the hotel front.

## Who else is building personal AI assistants?

There's been a surge of press around these personal AI assistants lately, including [Meta's Muse.](https://www.techrepublic.com/article/news-meta-muse-ai-agent-us-launch/) The original mainstream version was Siri, of course, and while it probably has the most context on your life of any tool out there, it has failed miserably at delivering a real AI experience. In fact, I was so impressed with Instinct that I wrote on LinkedIn that Apple should buy it.

## What makes a personal AI assistant get better over time?

Two things about AI have me really excited these days. The first is reinforcement learning: the AI learns how you actually work and adjusts accordingly. I saw it in my own email example above. Instinct matched my tone because it learned from my writing.

Over time, it learns when you answer messages, how you like things formatted, and what you care about. If your agent pings you every morning and you only ever answer at 5 pm, a good one stops pinging you in the morning. The assistant you have in month six is simply better than the one you started with, because it's been studying you.

The second is recursive self-improvement: an agent that learns as it works with you and updates its own code. Think of it this way: if iOS 1.0 had recursive self-improvement, every bug people reported would be fixed by the technology itself, and iOS 1.2 would ship to everyone without a human writing a line. The idea of an agent making itself better and coding those changes into itself is pretty remarkable.

It's also the source of the [security challenges](https://blog.livinghr.com/ai-use-policy-governance)you've been reading about with "rogue" agents, a topic that deserves its own post.

| | **Reinforcement learning** | **Recursive self-improvement** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it means | The AI learns how you work and adjusts | The agent updates its own code as it works |
| What you notice | Replies that sound like you, fewer pings at the wrong time | Bugs fixed without waiting on a human release |
| Example from this post | Instinct matching my email tone | iOS 1.0 fixing its way to 1.2 |
| The catch | It needs access to your data to learn | Harder to control, hence the "rogue" agent headlines |

## Who will win the personal AI assistant race?

My bet in the personal AI assistant race is on the company people actually trust (spoiler: probably not Meta). It will be one that already has access to your digital universe, or can get it without sending you on a scavenger hunt. Most importantly, it will be one that doesn't just answer your questions but actually gets things done.

## What comes next for AI agents at work?

We're still in the early innings of the AI ballgame, but make no mistake: the next phase is all about personal assistants that act like your own chief of staff. They'll handle your life admin now and, with better security, eventually manage your work life too. [Gartner predicts](https://www.gartner.com/en/articles/ai-agents-pc1) that by 2028, 33% of enterprise software applications will include agentic AI, up from less than 1% in 2024, with at least 15% of day-to-day work decisions made autonomously.

That's where HR comes in. When these agents move from your personal inbox into your company's systems, someone has to decide what they can touch, how people learn to work alongside them, and who's accountable when one goes sideways. That's a people question before it's a tech question, which is why [HR should lead this transformation,](https://blog.livinghr.com/hr-architecture-ai-ready-organizations) not hand it to the CTO.

For me, it's always been about humans plus machines, not humans versus machines. Tony Stark didn't need replacing. He needed JARVIS. This next chapter of AI is shaping up to be a fascinating ride.

## Frequently Asked Questions About Personal AI Assistants

### What is a personal AI assistant?

A personal AI assistant, or AI agent, connects to your email, calendar, and accounts and completes tasks for you, like replying to messages or booking travel. It acts on your behalf instead of only answering questions.

### How is a personal AI assistant different from a chatbot like ChatGPT or Claude?

A chatbot mostly answers questions in a chat window. A personal AI assistant takes action across your connected accounts, with you approving the important steps.

### Are personal AI assistants safe to use?

They're improving fast, but connecting an agent to your email and payment accounts carries real risk. Review what it can access and keep approval turned on for anything it sends or buys.

### Will AI assistants replace people at work?

No. They automate some work and augment the rest, and they work best as a partner to a person, the way JARVIS was to Tony Stark.
